Creating my advertising for the Gossip Deflector has been a fun experience. It has allowed me to explore concepts of negativity and protection in a humorous manner. The result is a black and white sketch that contrasts the agony of dealing with gossip with the comical relief provided by the Gossip Deflector. My classmates have provided great feedback, particularly liking the humour and retro style. One idea was to heighten the retro feel by overdoing the character's expression to convey the absurdity of the concept. I will implement the feedback by changing the character's stance and expressions to provide more comedy relief. In terms of visual design, the antique gadget advertising inspired me to use stronger lines and graphic shapes, which added to the humour of the concept. This criticism helped me modify the piece, allowing me to incorporate more personality and humour into the final design. I wanted to convey the invasive nature of gossip by depicting a guy shutting his ears in frustration. In the main image, he wears the Gossip Deflector and gives a thumbs up while arrows bounce off the helmet, symbolising gossip being deflected. This retro, 1920s-style aesthetic, intended to evoke odd old gadget commercials, has also been highly received, with one commenting that it has the charm of a vintage magazine. The black and white newspaper style finish enhances the old motif while also adding a timeless air to the artwork. This project has allowed me to explore the concept of deflecting negativity in a fun way, and the feedback has been positive. Moving forward, I'm thrilled to develop this style and explore new themes in my work.
